TRILON: A Game of Pitfalls
By Todd M. Lewis
--------------------------
The game Trilon presents the player with groups of patterned blocks
falling into a pit. Rows (either horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) of three
or more identical blocks are eliminated from the pit. The object is to orient
each falling group of three blocks so that when it lands in the pit it forms
rows of identical blocks which are then eliminated, thus keeping the pit from
filling. Once the pit is full, the game is over.
Each falling group is a Trilon, a pylon made of three patterned blocks.
You can move these trilons left and right, and you can rearrange their
constituent blocks by making the bottom block flip up to the top of the other
two blocks. When you have the trilon oriented and positioned the way you want
it, you can make it instantly drop into the pit. Once it lands, all rows of
three or more identically patterned blocks are removed, and your score is
increased by one point for each block eliminated. Any blocks remaining above
newly created holes fall into those holes.
Game play is controlled from the keyboard using any of four different
groups of keys. The key groups and their functions are outlined in the
following table:
\ Function
Group \ Left | Flip | Right | Drop
--------+---------+-------+--------+---------------
"A" | A | S | D | Space
"J" | J | K | L | Space
Cursor | Left | Up | Right | Down
KeyPad | 1,4,7 | 2,5,8 | 3,6,9 | Other KeyPad Keys
One menu sets all game options. ABOUT gives a brief game description.
NEW GAME has choices of four skill levels. PAUSE will temporarily halt the
game in progress, as will selecting some other window. Select PAUSE again to
resume the game. SOUND toggles the sound effects on and off. SHOW NEXT lets
you select whether you want to see what the next piece will be. QUIT ends the
program, but no one ever does that.
Trilon will run from either the CLI or the WorkBench, and it requires no
special setup or additional files for proper operation.
